What is the problem?

It's NOT just rabbits that multiply like rabbits...
Every year, Oregon shelters are forced to end the lives
of tens of thousands of unwanted pets.
Even though Portland has been named one of the most pet-friendly
cities in the US, the news is grim for our feline friends here:
- Multnomah County Animal Services reports that their cat intake for 2007
was the highest in 25 years, with 5567 cats entering the system and a 57%
euthanasia rate.
- Washington County’s Manager of Animal Services reports that in
2007 they took in 4399 cats. This is an increase of 25% over last
year, and a whopping 81% increase since 2000. Of those cats, 64%
were euthanized.

How does the Tom and Mom Cat Special work?
If you live in the Portland area and wish to spay or neuter your cat(s):
- Call our message phone at 503-292-6628,
ext. 2. Please leave your name, contact information, including full address and
phone number, and the age/sex of your cat(s).
A
volunteer will contact you to refer you to a participating clinic. You
must have a valid referral prior to making an appointment with the veterinary
clinic. If you do not qualify, we will refer you to other low-cost
spay/neuter programs.
All appointments will be between Valentines Day, February
14 and St. Patrick's Day, March 17 2008. Space is limited, so don't wait. The
only appointments open at this time are on the west side of Portland, and
are for male cats only. But this should not discourage you from
doing the right thing – this is a year-round problem and there are
local resources dedicated to helping you solve it. CLICK
HERE to learn more.
Surgeries will be performed by participating Portland-area veterinarians. Note:
The participating veterinarians reserve the right to refuse to spay or
neuter any cat deemed unfit for surgery at the time of appointment.
Clients are responsible for paying the veterinarian $10.00 (cash only,
please) on the day of the surgery. They will receive ‘after’ surgery
care instructions.

by some form of government assistance.
- Cats: Minimum age: 8 weeks; age/weight limitations

But what do the cats think of this?
Remember that life in general is harder for cats that have not been
neutered or spayed. In addition to being an effective and humane means of
decreasing the euthanasia of homeless animals in shelters, neutering pets
is an essential component of good pet health care. It may also eliminate
undesirable behaviors such as fighting, spraying and roaming. This,
in turn, helps prevent injury and veterinary expenses.

How is this program being funded?
Every participating veterinary clinic has generously committed
to neutering a minimum of 10 male cats (Toms) for $10.00 each. Many clinics
have also agreed to spay a limited number of female cats (Moms) for the $10.00
charge, plus an additional $20.00 which will be paid by the organizing non-profit
organizations and the event sponsors.
